Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Bad Breath

The World Health Organization defines health as “the wellness of a person’s body, mindandspirit”. Any situation that disrupts this state of wellness should be considered an illness. Bad breath is a condition that harms the mental, emotional and sometimes physical health of an individual. Therefore, bad breath is an illness and requires treatment.

The cause of bad breath can come from either within the mouth or outside of the mouth. No matter how well a person practices dental hygiene, this odor will not disappear without seeing a doctor.

There are five types of bad breath:

Type 1: Bacteria and sulfuric amino acids get in between the feathery bulges on the tongue and produce foul-smelling gases.

Type 2: A long-term infection in the throat, nose or sinus area creates a foul order at the back of the mouth.

Type 3: Gases coming from the stomach to the mouth.

Type 4: Odors coming from the lungs, also known as halitosis.

Type 5:Psychogenic. There is no actual bad breath, however, the patient has become obsessed with the idea that he or she has bad breath.

Acidic substances such as lemon, cola and sour-tasting fruits can reduce bad breath, while alkaline foods make the problem more severe.

The hormones of pregnant women make gums more prone to infection. For this reason, pregnant women should brush their teeth more often than others. Apart from this, the baby presses against the mother’s ribcage, make breathing difficult and created bad breath.

Apart from these, an acetone smell is characteristic of the breath of diabetes patients.

Snoring, sleep apnea, sleeping with an open mouth and the dryness associate with these conditions can also be causes of bad breath.

Are there treatments available for odors in the oral cavity?

First of all, a complete dental examination must be performed. Advanced gingival diseases and/or cavities must definitely be treated. To prevent bad breath, any infection must be gotten rid of including embedded or problem teeth. Good oral hygiene must be practiced, keeping all tooth surfaces and the tongue clean. After any infections in the mouth have been treated, use toothpastes and mouthwashes containing zinc. Avoid those that contain alcohol as they cause bad breath.

Drink water throughout the day to avoid dryness of the mouth and move saliva around the mouth. Increasing the amount of oxygen in the mouth prevents the spread of bacteria. The easiest way to do this is by chewing sugarless gum.

Use a tongue scraper or a toothbrush to remove bacteria built upon your tongue. Chew coffee grounds or suck on lemon or orange rinds. Quit smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Those who suffer from bad breath should show determination on this issue, as it could be the single action that completely cures the condition. If bad breath persists after receiving a dental intervention, it will be necessary to research the various other options that may be effective for you.
